Pant gained 21 slots and reached 17th place to equal Farokh Engineer’s feat which he achieved in 1973.Pant’s 20 catches and 350 runs in the four-match Test series against Australia saw him gain 673 ratings points, which is the highest by an Indian wicketkeeper batsman. Pant beat the record set by MS Dhoni, who had gained 662 points, while Engineer had managed 619 points. Before the Border-Gavaskar series, Pant was placed 59th on the list but made rapid progress to move into the top-20 after just nine Test matches. He scored an unbeaten 159 in the final Test in Sydney which ended due to rain and bad weather conditions, thus, handing India a 2-1 series win, their first ever in a Test series in Australia. He finished the series as the second highest run scorer behind Cheteshwar Pujara’s tally of 521 runs at 74.40. Pujara also gained a spot to be third in the batsmen’s rankings behind Virat Kohli and Kane Williamson.Pant’s hundred at the Sydney Cricket Ground was his second in Test cricket after the Oval century and was also the first by an Indian wicket-keeper in Australia. He is now only one of four Indian wicketkeepers – Budhi Kunderan, Nayan Mongia and MS Dhoni – with a 150-plus score in Test cricket. The 21-year-old broke the record for the most catches by an Indian wicketkeeper during the series and also equalled a world record of AB de Villiers and Jack Russell for the most number of catches by a wicketkeeper in a Test, taking 11 catches during India’s 31-run win at the Adelaide Oval.advertisementDespite his groundbreaking series Down Under, Pant was ignored for the upcoming three-match ODI series against the Aussies starting January 12.But chief selector MSK Prasad assured that Pant remains in their plans for the World Cup with MS Dhoni being the primary keeper-batsman along with Dinesh Karthik.”There is absolutely no doubt that he is among one of those wicketkeepers [for World Cup]. All the three shortlisted keepers are doing well. He is definitely part of pour World Cup plans. It’s a part of the workload management we are following,” Prasad told India Today’s Boria Majumdar in an exclusive interview.Prasad also went on to reveal that Pant is carrying a few niggles in his body after playing four high-intensity Tests against Australia which is why they are looking to manage his workload at the moment.”You have seen how many players we are resting these days. This kid has played the T20s and the four high-intensity Tests. Body also takes a wear and tear. He is having a few niggles, he needs to recover. I am sure he will come back much stronger.”He is the only wicketkeeper to score hundred in England and Australia. We have given him some targets. We have set him he has to finish the matches and come. This Sydney Test match will be a turning point in his career,” Prasad added. Also Read | Rishabh Pant needs to bat at No. 6, he can convert starts into hundreds: Sunil GavaskarAlso Read | India vs Australia: Adam Gilchrist is Rishabh Pant’s latest fan Also Read | Watch: Cheteshwar Pujara and Rishabh Pant sign SCG honours board after sensational hundredsAlso Read | Rishabh Pant will score more Test hundreds than MS Dhoni: Ricky PontingFor sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports.
