SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of Incarnate Word athletics wrapped up its holiday giving season with the Angel Tree event on the UIW campus. The Cardinals athletic department was led by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) in gathering items to be delivered to Catholic Charities of San Antonio.Throughout the month of November, tables were set up inside the UIW Life Skills center in addition to all home athletic contests in order to gather donated items such as toys, clothes, toiletries and gift cards for families and individuals in need in the San Antonio area. The Angel Tree event was established by the Incarnate Word SAAC as a means for Cardinals student-athletes to gather every day essential items that may be overlooked during the holiday giving season.All collected items were delivered to Catholic Charities of San Antonio during the first week of December. Catholic Charities of San Antonio benefits the Guadalupe Community Center, Seton Home and St. PJ’s Children’s Shelter.The mission of Catholic Charities is to provide for the needs of the community through selfless service under the sign of love. Committed to empowering individuals and families with the goal of fostering independence, the organization provides over 40 bilingual and culturally sensitive programs in 19 counties which comprise the Archdiocese of San Antonio.As part of the “Southland Gives Back” initiative, the Southland Conference will profile a community service outing from each of our 13 member institutions this holiday season.
