first_imgAdvertisement AN ONLINE mapping system that tracks down areas where mosquitoes, which carry malaria, have become resistant to insecticides has been unveiled by organisations from Kenya and Switzerland.Swiss humanitarian aid company Vestergaard Frandsen has partnered with the ESRI Eastern Africa and the Kenya Medical Research Institute to launch the system called IR Mapper (www.irmapper.com).IR Mapper as a website is planned to help identify locations in malaria-endemic countries where mosquitoes have developed resistance to the insecticides used in bed nets and indoor residual sprays. – Advertisement – According to a statement by the organisations involved with the project, the IR Mapper is planned to help direct as to which control tools should be deployed in areas of high resistance.Resistance among the type of malaria carrying mosquitos referred to as ‘Anopheles’, in particular, has been reported in 64 countries, with parts of sub-Saharan Africa and India of greatest concern, a statement from the organisations reads.IR Mapper then works by consolidating published data on insecticide susceptibility and resistance mechanisms from 1959 to 2012, which includes reports from the President’s Malaria Initiative, National Malaria Control Programmes and other reputable institutes.Tessa Knox, technical specialist at Vestergaard Frandsen SA, has told ITWeb Africa that the tool is the first of its kind for such data as it allows users to tailor maps catered to their informational needs.“We had very positive feedback on the beta version from global malaria stakeholders and malaria control programme personnel and researchers from throughout Africa. This version integrates further significant improvements based on user feedback,” she said.“A key use will be to support the development of Insecticide Resistance Management Plans for malarious regions, in line with recommendations by the World Health Organization,” Tessa Knox explained.Knox adds that, “The anticipated end users are decision-makers for malaria vector control, research entomologists and industry involved in vector control product development.”She explained that the tool was developed as a freely-accessible contribution to advance evidence-based decision making for malaria control.Credit: ITWeb Africalast_img read more

first_imgAdvertisement Over 10 million dubious Android applications have been logged by Security firm Kaspersky  to date. This is because Android is the most popular mobile operating system on the planet, and the most targeted by cyber criminals. It attracts the most attention from malware writers.“In most cases malicious programs target the user’s financial information. This was the case, for example, with the mobile version of Carberp Trojan that originated in Russia,” Kaspersky explains. “It steals user credentials as they are sent to a bank server.” – Advertisement – Over 98 percent of mobile malware is aimed at Android, Kaspersky notes. The prevalence of third-party app stores and Android’s open architecture both play roles in the reason why it’s such a popular target.SMS Trojans lead the way, followed by backdoor malware. Furthermore, Kaspersky says 62 percent of malicious applications are elements of mobile botnets.Kaspersky offers up a handful of tips, such as recommending against activating the “developer mode” on Android devices. The security outfit also warns against installing applications from third-party sources and carefully studying the rights that seemingly legitimate apps request. And of course Kaspersky recommends using protection software.Source: www.maximumpc.comlast_img read more

first_img[dropcap]A[/dropcap]nother big race day and it’s Willie Mullins again holding the ace cards.Only a Paul Nicholls win in tomorrow’s Grand National will prevent Mullins from claiming the GB trainers title but even that would just mask the true strength in depth between the two training establishments. The ammunition that Mullins has at it’s disposal is just mind-boggling and as the layers know only too well seldom fails to fire on the big occasions.Mullins has the banker of the meeting running this afternoon in Vautour who will go off even shorter than yesterday’s 18 length winner Annie Power. He has just five rivals in the JLT Melling Chase at 3.25pm and the biggest danger on the betting is Al Ferof who finished eight lengths behind him in the Ryanair Chase at Cheltenham. It’s hard to uncover any angles as to why that form should be turned around and Vautour’s narrow defeat at the hands of Cue Card in the King George at Kempton on Boxing Day was made to look even better after Cue Card’s demolition job in the feature race yesterday. Ruby Walsh needs to be sponsored by DFS given the number of armchair rides he’s had this season and Vautour really should be another.I’m also with Mullins and Walsh in the Grade 1 novices’ Hurdle at 2.15pm with Limini. She also streaked home at Cheltenham and remains unbeaten in three races. This is undoubtedly much tougher but she gets the mares’ allowance and can continue her winning run.I’m backing both Limini and Vautour in a Friday win double with Star Sports.RECOMMENDED BETS (scale of 1-100 points)BACK LIMINI / VAUTOUR double for 15 points at SP with Star SportsThursday: -15.00 pointsWhat’s your view? first_imgShareCONTACT: Jade BoydPHONE: 713-348-6778E-MAIL: jadeboyd@rice.eduRice unveils $100 million initiative for world health technologyProgram aims to improve health in developing world with technology, educatioRice University today announced a new $100 million global health initiative that will develop technologies to address global health problems. It will be supported by a new interdisciplinary institute called “Rice 360°.”  Rice 360° will combine the university’s strengths in science, engineering, public policy, social sciences and humanities to combat HIV, child mortality and other pressing health problems affecting women and children in the developing world. The new institute and initiative were announced today in New York at the annual meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI). Launched in 2005 by former President Bill Clinton, CGI is a nonpartisan catalyst for action that matches people with ideas to those who have the means to see them through. Rice 360° was formally recognized today by CGI for its efforts and commitment.“Nearly 10 million children under age 5 die each year in developing countries because they do not have access to appropriate health technologies — technologies that we often take for granted here and in other developed countries,” said Rice 360° Director Rebecca Richards-Kortum, professor and chair of Rice’s Department of Bioengineering. “Rice’s commitment to involving undergraduate students to address these problems is unique. Rice 360° blends engineering, education and service in a way that fires students’ imaginations and changes their lives.”Rice 360° is designed to tap undergraduates’ desire to make a difference, serve others and save lives. It will build on Rice’s successful Beyond Traditional Borders program, which pairs student teams with doctors in African pediatric HIV/AIDS clinics. The doctors tell the teams about problems they face in providing care, and the students work together to find solutions in class. The teams then take their prototypes to Africa for real-world testing and implementation during summer internships. For example, a Rice student team enrolled in this fall’s class is already working on developing a battery-powered IV drip monitor that can prevent babies from dying in hospitals and clinics where there is no electricity to run traditional monitors.“Rice has all the elements to make a difference in places that don’t have the resources or ability to solve their own health-care problems,” said Rice President David Leebron. “Rice’s bioengineering and nanotechnology programs are among the world’s best. We have strong and growing ties with the world’s largest medical center. But our biggest asset for this initiative is our students.”Rice has committed to raising $100 million for the institute’s programs. Rice 360° has already received $2 million in first-year seed funding, including a gift from Rice Board of Trustees Chairman Jim Crownover and his wife, Molly.n FacebookTwitterPrintEmailAddThislast_img read more

Lily’s Place, based in Huntington, Virginia, treats infants for Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS), which occurs when a baby suddenly experiences withdrawal after birth because it was exposed to illegal and/or prescription drugs while in the womb. NAS symptoms range from excessive crying and irritability to difficulties with breathing and feeding.“We use proven therapeutic handling methods and the latest weaning techniques to ease withdrawal symptoms,” the center’s website says. The center also provides services to parents and families dealing with addiction.“By placing a priority on the whole family, infants born dependent on drugs are given the best opportunity to thrive because their parents are also given the support and tools they need to recover and succeed, as parents and members of their community,” Mrs. Trump said during the visit. (JIM WATSON/AFP/Getty Images) “It is my hope that we can find ways to create more of the opportunities afforded by places like Lily’s Place, so that we can continue to help infants and children grow into happy, healthy adults.”Although NAS is rarely fatal, it can cause significant illness and often results in prolonged hospital stays, according to a Pediatrics journal article.A recent study found that cases of NAS have grown nearly five-fold between 2000 and 2012 and that most infants with NAS are covered under Medicaid, according to the Government Accountability Office (GAO).A baby with NAS is born every 25 minutes in the United States, according to a 2015 study cited by the GAO. The GAO published a report on Oct. 4, which said the most frequently cited challenges around NAS include the mother’s use of multiple drugs—as it can exacerbate NAS symptoms; stigma faced by pregnant women who use opioids; hospital staff burden and limited physical capacity to care for infants with NAS; limited coordination of care for mothers and infants with NAS; and gaps in research and data on NAS, such as research on the long-term effects of the condition.Related CoverageReining in the Opioid CrisisWhite House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said on Oct. 10 that 40 percent of babies born addicted to opioids go into the foster system. In 2015, there were more than 425,000 children in foster care, according to a Health and Human Services report—an increase of about 30,000 since 2012. When a newborn has been found to have been prenatally exposed to drugs or alcohol, this often triggers an investigation of suspected child abuse and neglect; and in in some states, prenatal substance exposure itself constitutes neglect and is grounds for removing a child from its parents, the GAO states.Mrs. Trump hosted a roundtable on Sept. 28, saying that addressing the crisis would be a focus as first lady. “I’m here to listen and learn,” she said. “I look forward to working alongside the presidential opioid commission and people such as yourself to do all we can to teach children the dangerous consequences of drug abuse.”The Trump administration has launched several initiatives to combat the opioid crisis in America, including the Commission on Combating Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis.Mr. Trump has instructed his administration to use all “appropriate emergency and other authorities” to respond to the opioid epidemic, in an official statement on Aug. 10. The best action is not to start. Just say no.”Drug overdoses are now the leading cause of death for Americans under 50.Based on preliminary data, approximately 64,000 Americans lost their lives to drug overdoses last year, according to the Department of Justice. This is up 23 percent from 2015, when 52,000 people died of overdoses. Most often an opioid addiction starts with a prescription pill obtained through a friend or family member. It can take just one painkiller like oxycodone, or an anti-anxiety medication like Adderall, for some people to get hooked.Read MoreAn Addicted County and a Sheriff’s Cry for Help Follow Charlotte on Twitter: @charlottecuthbo Show Discussionlast_img read more
