first_img CHALLENGING PERCEIVED FINDINGS Public perception that the Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission (JADCO) is on a witch-hunt for West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell and local sportsmen played a big role in the board of the commission stepping to rule that Executive Director Carey Brown withdraw the appeal against the Jamaican cricketer. Russell was banned from cricket in January, for a year, after being found guilty of three successive whereabouts rule violations. However, a couple months after the hearing, JADCO legal representative Lackston Robinson contested the result by launching an appeal, seeking further retribution for Russell, who, at the same time, submitted a cross-appeal aimed at throwing out JADCO’s appeal as well as the original verdict. Yesterday’s development laid the case to rest, but board chairman Alexander Williams admitted that public interest prompted them to step in and stop the appeal before the hearing started yesterday. SOUGHT LEGAL ADVICE “You don’t have to ask me if it painted JADCO in negative light. We observe the public sphere, and there were a lot of concerns about the appeal. I felt it necessary to seek other legal advice, so I thought it appropriate to get the opinion of the attorney general, and as a consequence of that and other considerations, we withdrew the appeal,” he stated. Vice-president of the board, Zachary Harding, also weighed in, and insisted JADCO is on no witch-hunt, but is, instead, trying to protect compliant athletes and the nation’s image. “All board members are supportive of Brand Jamaica and our image and perception on a global stage. There’s nothing we will ever do to tarnish that. Sometimes people take a view that there is a witch-hunt and JADCO is out to get an athlete; the board would never do that. Everything we do is to protect and support compliant athletes and protect Brand Jamaica,” he said. However, Williams insisted that everything is done within the World Anti-Doping Agency’s guidelines. “This case is of public importance and we want to get this correct, so it was by consultation with the attorney general,” he noted. “It (the appeal) was not necessarily to increase the sanction imposed on Mr Russell, but to challenge the panel’s perceived findings,” he said. He admitted that there were sufficient reasons to file an appeal, although the panel did not state their reason for imposing the year ban, but the board felt the panel considered Russell’s conduct when making the decision. Meanwhile, Russell’s legal representative, Patrick Foster, QC, said he was instructed to withdraw the cross-appeal after JADCO withdrew their appeal. “My client wishes this episode of his life to end. He instructed me not to proceed with the cross-appeal. He has about eight months left to serve and he can start practising with his team two months before he is cleared, so he is just gearing up to perform with the team and move forward,” he stated.last_img read more

first_img“We felt it was important for us as a movement to weigh in by holding ourselves to an objective standard that was created by more than 300 charter school leaders,” Young said. “It’s in our interest to make sure all charter schools are doing a great job by a variety of different measures.” To be certified by the association, charters must undergo an independent review by third-party agencies, such as the Western Association of Schools and Colleges or the state Board of Education Renewal Review. The charter association will not charge a fee for certification, but schools would have to pay $5,000 to $10,000 for third-party reviews. Members of the Charter Schools Association will have to get certified within four years of joining, and will have to undergo periodic reviews, she said. Los Angeles Unified has 103 charters – more than any other district in the nation – but has resisted efforts to expand the movement. Officials said they will review the association’s guidelines to see if they jibe with the district’s approval and renewal process. Striving to set uniform standards for the burgeoning charter movement, the California Charter Schools Association announced Tuesday a certification program for the independent campuses. Granada Hills Charter High School is among six charters in Los Angeles Unified and 39 in California that already meet the association’s standards for academic achievement, ethical leadership, focus on increasing quality, responsible governance and fiscal accountability. A total of 84 other Los Angeles Unified charters are candidates for the association’s seal of approval. Caprice Young, the former LAUSD board president who now heads the association, said the program provides an objective way to help identify high-quality schools. “Anything that motivates charters to provide quality education to kids is a good thing and is helpful,” said Greg McNair, who oversees charters for the district. “If anything concerns me, it’s that CCSA is a membership organization, that’s how they exist, so whether or not they look at the same things we look at, whether they are as rigorous as we are, stands to question.” The announcement shifts the state’s largest charter school membership association from advocating for the creation of charter schools to supporting charter schools committed to high quality and accountability, Canter said. Penny Wohlstetter, a professor and director of the Center on Educational Governance at the University of Southern California, last week released a separate set of quality measures for charters. first_imgInzwischen sind drei Jahre vergangen, seit Moritz seine Mission begonnen hat. Als gut besuchte Attraktion war schon 2017 Raistlins Lockpicking Workshop zu Gast: SharePrint RelatedNeu: Eventkalender auf Deiner ÜbersichtsseiteAugust 22, 2017In “Deutsch”Liebst Du Geocaching? first_imgThe Perks: More Storage And Better Security For users, the Mega message is less clear. Whether they were using Megaupload for piracy or legitimate file sharing, the site’s users have had to move on to other means of transferring bits across the Internet. For some, that means services like Dropbox while others moved to Megaupload-esque solutions like Rapidshare and Mediafire, both of which have made changes to their functionality and public posture since the Megaupload raid. Where ever they went, Dotcom is hoping to lure those users back with tightened security and ample storage space. On the surface, Mega’s offering is pretty tempting. While Dropbox and Box.net limit free users to 2GB to 5GB of storage, Mega lets you pile up 50GB worth of data before asking you to pay. The premium subscriptions start at 500GB for $10 per month and go up to 4TB for $30 a month. Given History, Is It Worth It?Sure, Mega is also much more secure than its predecessor, using super-tight asymmetric encryption to keep data secure and out of view from curious governments and other third parties. But no matter how good it is, do you really want to store your valuable data on a service tied to Kim Dotcom? When you sign up for Mega, it’s hard not to think about what happened to the founder’s last filesharing product. You can’t help but picture the armed raid and simultaneous seizure of Megaupload’s servers.  Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… john paul titlow Tags:#filesharing#Kim Dotcom#megaupload#piracy#security A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Related Posts center_img In an over-the-top press event at his New Zealand mansion last weekend, the notorious Kim Dotcom unveiled a new cloud storage service called Mega. From the ashes of his now-defunct Megaupload, which was shut down by U.S authorities exactly one year ago, rises a service that promises to be incredibly secure and better at handling copyright complaints. But will users flock to it? More to the point, should you use it?On a personal level, Mega is a big win for Kim Dotcom. With it, he shows the world that the military-style raid on his mansion one year ago (which was theatrically mimicked during the Mega launch event) did not succeed in bringing him down, even as he faces criminal charges over Megaupload’s alleged involvement in copyright infringement.  It’s also hard not to think about Kyle Goodwin. He’s the Ohio-based high school sports broadcaster who was using Megaupload to transfer video files between himself and the video editors he had hired to help produce his broadcasts. After one of his external hard drives was damaged, Goodwin tried logging into his Megaupload account to retrieve his old files. By then, the FBI had already seized the servers, locking Goodwin and plenty of other users out of their data. He has since been involved in a class action lawsuit demanding that authorities give non-infringing users access to their Megaupload data.  How likely is a shutdown of Mega? Thanks to the way the service was built and the lessons learned from the demise of Megaupload, probably pretty remote. But for some users, it’s going to be tough to swallow the idea of trusting a service that is so intrinsically linked with the subject of a major, ongoing criminal prosecution. Other than the color scheme, the Mega interface isn’t all that different from that of Megaupload. Even the logo’s typography is the same: It looks like they just lobbed off the “upload” and changed the color. It just feels a lot like a site with which many people are familiar, but which has been replaced with an FBI anti-piracy warning message. Potential Security HolesPlus, as big of an improvement as Mega may be when it comes to privacy and security, it’s not perfect. In a detailed analysis of Mega’s security, Ars Technica pointed out that the JavaScript-based method of randomly generating numbers for the encryption keys isn’t the most rock-solid option available. “The end result of this is that it is easier (not easy, but easier) to reverse-engineer a Mega user’s private RSA key than it should be,” writes Lee Hutchinson. “That means it’s easier to spoof the identity of a Mega user when sending messages or files.”The site has other limitations as well. For one, it’s very insistent that people use Chrome to access Mega, due to its advanced implementation of HTML5 features. Not even the latest versions of Firefox, Opera, Internet Explorer or Safari will suffice. Despite this strict adherence to the latest in Web standards, Mega still relies on Flash for some tasks, like downloading files. That means it won’t work on iOS devices until Mega submits official apps, which Apple may or may not approve. What does that all add up to? For users like Kyle Goodwin, who have a day-to-day need to rely heavily on cloud-based file storage for critical data, Mega remains a bit of a gamble. But for sharing miscellaneous, backed-up files here and there, there’s little reason to not give it a try.
