first_imgCanadian ferry operator BC Ferries informed that Salish Eagle, the second of the company’s three new vessels, will officially commence service on the Tsawwassen – Southern Gulf Islands route on June 21.Salish Eagle is the second of three new Salish Class vessels that are dual-fuel and capable of operating on either natural gas or ultra-low sulfur marine diesel.The ferry arrived in British Columbia in March this year, after traveling 10,440 nautical miles from Gdansk-based Remontowa Shipbuilding.According to BC Ferries, its use of natural gas for these vessels will result in the reduction of an estimated 9,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per year, the same as taking approximately 1,900 passenger vehicles off the road annually.“After the successful introduction of Salish Orca in mid-May, we are very excited to introduce our second new ship, Salish Eagle, into service,” Mark Collins, BC Ferries’ President and CEO, commented.The vessel, which can accommodate some 145 vehicles and up to 600 passengers and crew, is equipped with two marine evacuation systems with life rafts, smoke and natural gas detection alarms, and fire suppression systems.Salish Eagle measures 107 meters in length overall and has a service speed of 15.5 knots.Last month, BC Ferries welcomed Salish Orca, the first of three vessels, into service.In early June, Salish Raven, the third ferry, arrived in British Columbia. The ship proceeded to BC Ferries’ refit facility in Richmond to prepare for operational service in the Southern Gulf Islands in the fall.last_img read more

first_imgPhoto Courtesy of WPBTV A Haitian man was arrested Saturday afternoon by detectives at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in connection with a sexual battery of a mentally handicapped woman, Boynton Beach police have reported.He has been identified as Pascal Estime, 55. Estime is accused of sexually battering the woman, who is now 33 years old, on two occasions at a house, impregnating her. Police said the pregnancy was terminated and DNA from the fetus was retained for evidentiary purposes.The case against Estime went cold for 12 years, during which time his whereabouts were unknown.Boynton Beach police adopted the case in July 2016 and tracked Estime to Orlando, and a search warrant was obtained for the man’s DNA. But Estime went to Haiti before the warrant could be served.The warrant for Estime’s DNA was executed with assistance from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office on June 13 at his home in Orlando. Detectives drove to his home to collect the DNA swab and submit it for processing.The detectives were notified last Thursday that the probability of paternity for Estime in reference to the compared fetal material was 99.9997 percent. A warrant was obtained for Estime’s arrest for two counts of sexually battery on a mentally defective person.The detectives also received information Estime had booked a JetBlue flight Fort Lauderdale to Haiti.With assistance from the Broward Sheriff’s Office and U.S. marshals, Estime was taken into custody while pretending to sleep at Gate F4 in the JetBlue terminal. first_imgThe Florida woman who pulled an alligator from her yoga pants during a May traffic stop has dodged a bullet in court.Ariel Machan-Le Quire, 25, was sentenced to probation Thursday after pleading guilty to four counts of illegally possessing wild animals. Michael Clemons, her 22-year-old accomplice in the case, has not yet been sentenced.Machan-Le Quire and Clemons grabbed Internet headlines in May following a traffic stop in Charlotte County.After a sheriff’s deputy found 41 turtles stuffed into a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles backpack, he asked Machan-Le Quire if there were any other animals in the vehicle he needed to know about. (VFI) which is moving onto vacant industrial property south of Tumwater.  The Maytown area acreage is the former location of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers which has moved to Lewis County.  The move meant the loss of some 20 fulltime jobs and dozens of part time positions as well as approximately $850,000 in sales tax revenue.Thurston County Commission Chair Cathy Wolfe says Valley Freightliner is a good fit for the site.  “We are very pleased to have VFI as an employer in our community.  In addition to the employment boost, they match well for an area that is already zoned for their type of activity.”  The site includes 34 usable acres with paved parkingsurrounding buildings with tall ceilings.  Most of the site is zoned rural resource industrial, which allows for automobile, truck and heavy equipment service, repair and sales.According to their website, VFI has been in business since 1986. They sell, finance, insure and service commercial trucks for medium and heavy duty applications. The dealer for Portland-based Freightliner Trucks, the largest manufacturer of medium and heavy duty trucks in North America, already has facilities in Pacific, near Sumner, and in Mount Vernon.  VFI initially plans to hire about 20 persons for the Maytown location and up to 75 within five years, according to the Thurston Economic Development Council.Commissioner Wolfe says thanks go to all involved in putting the deal together.  “Of course we thank VFI for their decision to operate in Thurston County, the Thurston Economic Development Council for their hard work and the folks at Thurston County Land Use and Environmental Review.”Currently, the Valley Freightliner Incorporated web site has five Olympia area management level jobs listed.
