While that’s not entirely wrong, it’s not entirely true either.Next year South Africa hosts the 2009 Fifa Confederations Cup – a tournament played by eight teams which comprise the winners of all Fifa competitions held throughout year, the revered World Cup trophy holders and the host nation. This weekend a beady eye was cast on South Africa as the draw deciding the matches that the eight teams will play took place at a glitzy African-themed event at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg.Hundreds of delegates and media personnel from around the world witnessed the preliminary draw for the competition, which will be held from 14 to 28 June 2009.“It would be wrong to regard the Fifa Confederations Cup as merely an entrée to the main course,” says Fifa Secretary General Jerome Valcke. “The eight participating nations represent the cream of their respective continents and the contrast between these teams and their diverse styles should create a fascinating spectacle for the fans. It is shaping up to be an exciting precursor to the 2010 Fifa World Cup.”From a football point, host South Africa, had the proverbial  luck of the draw as the teams opponents in Group A are Iraq, winners of the 2007 Fifa Asian Cup, OFC Nations Cup holders New Zealand and UEFA Euro Champions Spain.“It could have been worse. It is in our favour, but we should not underestimate Iraq and New Zealand, who are both competitive teams that have fought hard to be here. The home ground advantage should give us a good chance of getting into the next round. This will lift the spirit of all of us and will be wonderful for the country,” said Danny Jordaan, CEO of the South African Local Organising Committee (SALOC).Group B is made up of CONMEBOL Cup and current Confederations Cup trophy holders Brazil, World Cup winners Italy, African Cup of Nations champions Egypt, and Concacaf Gold Cup winners USA.As it stands, the draw favours the local team’s chances of gaining entry to the semi-finals – so the longer the South African team stay in the competition, the more matches will be sold out. This will be a relief to the Local Organising Committee who is concerned that matches where only international sides playing will not be well attended.“There’s a perception that South Africa is a rugby and cricket nation and if we do not fill our stadiums we will only reinforce that stereotype,” says Jordaan. “It will be a wonderful opportunity for the fans to get a taste of a Fifa World Cup atmosphere in the stadiums. We are confident that South Africans will not want to miss this opportunity to see some of the best teams in world and that matches will be sell-outs. And as for the organisation, our stadiums will undoubtedly be ready and the Confederations Cup will give us a great opportunity to test our systems and logistical planning ahead of the Fifa World Cup.”To get locals into the spirit of things the SALOC has launched a marketing campaign that will be carried across all mediums – radio, television, community broadcasters, print and online.“It is important to get the message out there now because people are still unaware of the quality of the tournament,” says chief marketing and commercial officer Derek Carstens. “We are a soccer loving nation and we have to prove it to the world that the atmosphere that such a tournament generates internationally is not wasted on South Africans.”The SALOC has also made tickets to the 2009 Fifa Confederations Cup affordable for locals. Recently with Fifa matches, spectators have to apply either online or with a ticketing partner (in this case First National Bank) to purchase a ticket. According to Fifa, ticket applications submitted will be processed on a first-come first-served basis – in the order of receipt. All successful applicants will be notified of their success within approximately seven to 10 working days after submitting their request.A maximum of 20 tickets can be purchased and there is no limit on the number of games. There are two categories of tickets available – individual match tickets and Venue Specific Tickets (VST). Under the VST are two series of tickets – one which allows access to all games played at a particular stadium and another which includes games plus access to the finals. For South Africans they range from R210 to R4 340 and bought from outside South Africa are from US$40 to $620.Tickets for individual matches range from R70 to R1 400 locally and between $10 and $200 for outsiders.Do you have any comments or queries about this article? first_imgWhy Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Tags:#How To#start#startups Related Posts dana oshiro Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hostingcenter_img A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… If you’re a mobile app developer, one of your biggest concerns is getting noticed. Companies like Smule and Tapulous already have recognized brands; however, for the independent app designer, the promotion process requires a fair amount of strategy. One proven method of increasing downloads is becoming listed as one of the App Store’s top selling services. We spoke to faberNovel‘s Baptiste Benezet to find out how indie developers can hack the App Store ranking algorithm. How to market your appView more presentations from Ouriel Ohayon.Benezet explains that although Apple offers a variety of featured content within the web-based App Store interface, 80% of sales are made via the mobile ecosystem. While sales are driven by Apple editorial content, category browsing and rankings, because there are no opportunities to advertise in the mobile app store, it’s more important than ever to promote your app using the right marketing mix. The company collected data from the Regie Autonome Transports Parisiens (RATP) French commuter app to create a good formula for product, pricing, placement and promotion. Product & Pricing: faberNovel found that a differentiated pricing strategy was a good way to earn revenue. While the company hit a few hiccups with its initial pricing of 1,59€, after cutting the premium service cost by 50% and building a phenomenal free experience, the new pricing strategy generated 3 times more sales. Says Benezet, “A good free version is crucial in pushing users towards the premium service, especially when the cost of the paid app is high.” In addition to monetizing via app sales, the company earned a good chunk of revenue through in-app advertising in the free version. Promotion: Buying impressions on major websites was abysmal in drawing new users. From 500,000 impressions purchased on major French networks, the site was only able to generate 4 app sales. Benezet suggests that cross-application advertising is a better solution as relevant users are targeted via the devices they’ll use to download the new apps. Place: Benezet argues that in the world of iPhone applications, size matters. Once the RATP application download was reduced below 10Mb, the company saw its largest sales peak ever as users were able to access the service via their 3G networks (rather than via the web-based App store). In addition to this consideration, Benezet’s most groundbreaking finding was in the App Store’s ranking algorithm. Explains Benezet, “The formula for App rankings only accounts for your last 4 days of sales.” The formula is 8 times the sales of the current day + 5 times the sales on the 2 proceeding days + 2 times the sales on initial date. Benezet suggests that a promotional campaign of 4 consecutive days is more likely to pay off with a top ranking rather than a staggered date campaign. Furthermore, because app sales tend to increase by about 20% on Saturday and Sunday (even with a commuter app), it is most advantageous to be one of the top ranking category apps at the start of the weekend. As your sales increase over the weekend, your app’s daily ranking increases and the next four days revenue generation becomes a self-fulfilling cycle. While the rankings remain relative to other application sales, faberNovel believes this model will help you increase the success of app downloads. After testing the theory, the company welcomes feedback to faberNovel.com. 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Marketlast_img read more

first_imgColor correction tools like DaVinci Resolve are more affordable and accessible than ever, but working with color takes more than just the right software. Here are three tips for building a color correction suite that will improve your output.Top image via Digital ProductionMuch like editing bays, color correction suites come in all shapes and sizes. On the top level, a color room at a high-end facility might have hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of equipment in it, while an at-home setup will naturally be more modest. With that said, just because you might be working from home or from a small facility doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t follow the same principles as the larger color suites. You may not need a $30,000 color board or a 4K projector, but what you do need are a number of basic components that will make or break the quality of your work. Let’s take a look at three of the most important aspects of any color suite.1. Light ControlImage of The Vanity VFX color grading station in Toronto via BTL News If you come from an offline editing background, then you might be used to editing on your laptop on set, in a coffee shop, at the kitchen table, or anywhere else you can find space to set up shop. Unfortunately, things aren’t as simple when working with color, as ambient room light can pose big challenges when handling color work.Imagine attempting to color correct a photo on your iPhone in a dark room. Now imagine trying to color the same photo on your iPhone in broad daylight. Obviously you’ll have a much tougher time working outside, since the glare from the sun makes a perfectly clear view of your screen nearly impossible. The same principle applies inside your color room.Any little bit of light that seeps into your room through a window, door, or elsewhere will negatively impact your color session. Not only does ambient light make it more difficult to view your monitor properly, but it’s inconsistent nature will also throw off your results. For instance, you might start your session in the morning while the sun isn’t yet overhead — but by noon, it’s shining straight through the window. Whether you realize it or not, you’ll be compensating for this extra light in the room by making color adjustments in your footage. For these reasons and more, the first thing you need to do when setting up your color suite is control the light. Buy blackout blinds and install them on every window in your suite to block any and all uncontrolled light. With the house lights off, your room should be pitch black inside, so make whatever changes you need to ensure that your space achieves this.2. Room ColorImage via the Toast AgencyAmbient light isn’t the only variable that can affect your ability to see color objectively — the colors in your room can pose just as many challenges. If you’ve ever worked in a professional color suite, you know that almost all of them have walls that are painted grey. The reason for this is quite simple: if your room is any color other than a neutral grey, your eyes will adjust to the ambient color of the room. Therefore, you’ll be making inaccurate judgements when it comes to coloring your footage.Think of what happens when you wear blue sunglasses for more than a few minutes and then take them off — everything now appears yellow, or warm. This is because your eyes have an ability to “white balance,” so to speak, and this phenomenon can occur just as obviously when you’re inside your color suite. If you were to attempt to color a project in a room that’s painted a bright vivid color (let’s say cherry red), there’s no question that your images would all have a very distinct color cast to them. Your eyes would adjust to the red in the room pretty quickly. In an unconscious attempt to balance the color of the image to your eyes, you’d be inadvertently adding more red to your images than called for.So, if you plan on doing professional color work, be sure to paint your room neutral grey to avoid headaches and technical issues with your projects. It’s also ideal to use light fixtures that have a color temperature of 6500K for greater consistency and accuracy.3. Calibrated MonitorEven if your room is light controlled and painted neutral grey, you aren’t quite out of the woods yet. The other huge variable to consider when working on color projects your monitoring system set up — more specifically, how it’s calibrated.Regular computer monitors are not designed for critical color work. Some monitors are warmer than others, some have too much contrast, others are oversaturated, and so on. The bottom line is that a $150 monitor from Best Buy is never going to display colors to meet a professional standard, and attempting to use monitors like this to color with is ill-advised.If you’re serious about color, you really need to invest in a proper broadcast monitor that can take an SDI video signal and be calibrated professionally. You may not need to invest in a color board right away, or a huge office space to work in, but investing in a monitor is an absolute must. In many ways, your monitor is the heart of your color operation — so if there’s one area you’re going to want to invest your money, it’s here.Interested in learning more about color grading? There are such provisions, we have read the Constitution as well,” Ms. Banerjee said at a core committee meeting of her party in Kolkata.last_img read more
