first_imgGovernor Wolf Supports Marsy’s Law for Crime Victims Constitutional Amendment April 11, 2018 SHARE Email Facebook Twittercenter_img Press Release,  Public Safety Harrisburg, PA – Governor Tom Wolf today backed Marsy’s Law, which proposes a state constitutional amendment securing permanent, enforceable rights of victims.“It is important for us all to reflect on how we can improve the lives of crime victims in Pennsylvania,” Governor Wolf said. “Marsy’s Law will amend the state constitution to provide crime victims with equal protections and participation in the process. Victims and their families deserve equity. I thank the Senate for approving this bill unanimously and I urge the General Assembly to continue advancing Marsy’s Law.”The proposed amendment stipulates that there be notice of hearings and other proceedings, protection from the accused, notice of release or escape, full and timely restitution, proceedings free from delays and with prompt conclusion, the ability to confer with the government’s attorney and information on all of these rights. The Senate recently advanced Senate Bill 1011 unanimously and sent it to the House. The bill is also supported by Pennsylvania’s Office of Victim Advocate and the Pennsylvania District Attorneys Association.“While Pennsylvania stands out as a leader in victim service delivery and protective legislation, we are one of only 15 states that do not have constitutional amendments for victims,” said Jennifer Storm, Pennsylvania Victim Advocate. “We have many laws that offer meaningful opportunities for victim engagement, but no enforcement of those laws. Marsy’s Law would seek to uphold the promises our legislature and the Wolf Administration have made when passing laws to protect victims, by also enforcing them.”Governor Wolf also announced that the Capitol building in Harrisburg will be lit purple in honor for Crime Victims’ Rights Week.last_img read more

first_imgImage courtesy of PetronasMalaysian energy giant Petronas said on Monday it has completed its first commercial gassing up and cooling down services at its Bintulu LNG complex in Sarawak. The operation, which includes cooling down an LNG carrier’s tanks to cryogenic temperature after dry-docking and before loading its next cargo, was recently performed on the vessel Singapore Energy, according to a Petronas statement. The vessel, that berthed at the Bintulu LNG terminal after arriving from Linggi, off the Straits of Melaka, completed the cool-down operation in about 11 hours. The success of the services positions Bintulu as one of “the premier LNG hubs, as only few terminals in the world offer this facility,” Petronas said. These services are offered at “attractive rates” by Bintulu Port to LNG vessel operators and owners.“The partnership with Bintulu Port Sdn Bhd (BPSB), a subsidiary of Bintulu Port Holdings Berhad (BPHB) and Bintulu Port Authority (BPA) will enhance Petronas’ portfolio of services in the integrated LNG value chain,” Petronas Vice President of LNG Marketing & Trading, Ahmad Adly Alias said in the statement.“Following an agreement signed last year between BPSB and PLL, we augmented efforts to garner vessel operators and owners’ interests to utilise this service in Bintulu,” he said.Alias added that Petronas is confident that these services will draw more LNG vessel operators and owners to call at Bintulu LNG terminal.last_img read more

first_imgAfter an eight month battle against her old nemesis cancer, Darcee Murphy answered her Savior’s call home for total restoration, healing, and eternal peace. She was born on June 3, 1956 in Detroit, Michigan to Richard and Jeanette (Norwood) Schultz. Along with her parents and two older brothers, she spent her younger years in Peru, Indiana where she attended Maconaquah High School, graduating in 1974. A decade’s worth of fervent prayers for a sister were answered on her thirteenth birthday exactly, and she would also welcome a grandson years later to the day, on her fifty-second birthday.  Darcee followed Pat faithfully, moving hearth and home sixteen times total, including three states. Along the way, they added to their family with three beautiful daughters and over time, a proper zoo including dogs, birds, hamsters, fish, and even a ferret. Darcee loved all creatures big and small, with the exception of cowbirds. She loved making her forever home in the gently rolling hills of rural Brookville, where she fed and housed wild birds and cultivated beautiful flower beds.  Memorial contributions can be directed to Child Evangelism Fellowship at involved/donate, or to the Hope Lodge in Cleveland (513) 618-5585.  To sign the online guestbook or to leave a personal condolence, please visit  The staff of Cook Rosenberger Funeral Home is honored to care for the family of Darcee Murphy. Darcee passed peacefully into her Savior’s arms on Sunday, December 3, 2017, surrounded by the comfort and love of her own home and family. One of her favorite verses and dearest ambitions is to hear God welcome her Home by saying “Well done, good and faithful servant”.  Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, December 9, 2017 from 10 a.m. until 12 noon at Cobblestone Community Church, 4191 Kehr Road, Oxford, OH.  Funeral services, officiated by Pastor Andrew Holzworth will be held at 12:30 p.m., where all friends and family are welcome. A graveside service for immediate family will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, Brookville. A celebration for Darcee’s life will follow. Those surviving who will cherish and honor Darcee’s memory include her loving husband Pat Murphy; daughters, Karis (Randy) Troyer of Brookville, Rachel (Nick) Vanoven of Indianapolis, and Lauren (Adam) Golias of Brookville; grandchildren, Brynn, Colin, Nicholas, Logan, Josie, Cora and Darcy; mother, Jeanette Schultz of Kokomo; two brothers, Jeff (Lynn) Schultz of Columbus, OH, and Vic (Susan) Schultz of Louisville, KY, and one sister, Holly (Bob) Constable of Kokomo.  She was preceded in death by her father, Richard Schultz. While we mourn her loss here on earth, we can draw comfort from a post-it note tucked in her Bible, and take heart:“Christ never allows any illness to end in death for a Christian. All believers in Christ will rise from the dead. Neither does it have to be the end of the life of the loved ones left behind – but too often it is. Christ desires to raise up those left behind from the living dead. Any kind of “death” is an invitation to resurrection life for believer. Any kind of loss never has to mean the end of an abundant, effective, or even joyful life for any Christian.” As a B&K carhop in Peru, Indiana, she met the love of her life, Patrick Murphy, and won his adoration after a first date full of elephant jokes (What time is it when an elephant sits on your fence? Time to build a new fence!) Love and laughter would form the cornerstone of their marriage, which was performed and celebrated on March 26, 1977 at First Baptist Church in Peru.  The earthly beauty she not only nurtured but embodied was just a faint reflection of the glory of Heaven that she strove for. We take comfort knowing that she knew Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior, and it was her dearest desire to share her faith. Wherever Darcee went, goodness sprouted, whether it was a Mom’s-in-Touch bible study, a Good News Club, a prayer group, or even just a passing conversation with an acquaintance. It would be the greatest joy of Darcee’s to know that her testimony led another soul to salvation. last_img read more

first_img England centre-back Stones continues to be heavily linked with a move to Chelsea, despite repeated warnings from Everton that he is not for sale, before the September 1 transfer deadline. The Toffees are believed to have rejected three bids for the highly-rated 21-year-old from Chelsea, the most recent of £30million. Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard has been impressed by the unflappable performances of team-mate John Stones amid considerable speculation over his future. Press Associationcenter_img Some players might be affected by such attention but Stones appears to be taking it in his stride, delivering another composed and mature display in defeat against Manchester City on Sunday. Howard said: “John is a different character (to some others). He is not arrogant. The most important thing for him is to play football and that is what he continues to do. “It is no surprise to me that his performances have been good. I think he is playing well.” Manager Roberto Martinez also continues to speak highly of the youngster and is determined not to lose him, even though he is poised to bring in a new defender in Argentinian Ramiro Funes Mori. Martinez said: “It puts a smile on your face when you see someone like John Stones defending the way he defends, getting on the ball the way he does. “He is an incredible footballer and to be able to organise things and control things at such a young age shows you the type of footballer he is. I thought he was outstanding once more (against City). “We have seen John grow in the last two years and we want to be as strong as we can when the window closes. We have our own aims and objectives and want to become a winning team.” River Plate defender Funes Mori, 24, watched Sunday’s game from the stands at Goodison Park and Martinez said afterwards a deal was close. last_img read more

first_img The Dutch football association (KNVB) ordered an investigation into the ownership and structure of Vitesse following allegations by former owner Merab Jordania that Chelsea heavily influenced policy at the club. The Premier League champions have regularly loaned players to the Eredivisie side since 2010 and they currently have five members of their playing staff at the Dutch club on a temporary basis. Vitesse Arnhem have been cleared of improper conduct over their relationship with Chelsea. Press Associationcenter_img The KNVB insists there is nothing wrong with the relationship between the two clubs, however. A statement from the governing body of Dutch football read: ” From various interviews and other material available, the study concluded that there is no evidence that Chelsea has control in the policies of Vitesse. “The study shows that there is no written partnership agreement established between the clubs, but Chelsea and Vitesse collaborate in some areas, such as the hiring of players. “The presented leases between Vitesse and Chelsea are in accordance with the regulations and correspond to rental agreements between Vitesse and other clubs.” last_img read more

first_img Share This StoryFacebookTwitteremailPrintLinkedinRedditBy The Associated Press (AP) — The Latest on NFL’s free agency. Teams were required to use franchise tags on players by noon EDT Monday. Teams can negotiate with representatives of free agents for the next two days but cannot finalize any agreements. (all times local):___12:30 p.m. The nonexclusive tag means Jones must be offered a one-year contract for no less than the average of the top five salary cap hits at defensive tackle for the previous five years. It also means that if Jones signs an offer sheet from another team, the Chiefs can match that offer or let him go and receive two first-round picks as compensation.Jones had 15 1/5 sacks two seasons ago, which spurred his desire for a long-term deal. He wound up skipping the entire offseason when that didn’t happen, but he returned in time for training camp and started 12 of 13 games. He finished with nine sacks and help the Chiefs win their first Super Bowl title since 1970.11:30 a.m.The Cleveland Browns opened free agency by placing a second-round tender on running back Kareem Hunt, who played eight games last season after returning from an NFL suspension.Hunt is a restricted free agent and can negotiate with other teams about a contract. If he reaches an agreement elsewhere, Cleveland can match any offer. If the Browns decide not to match the offer, they would receive a second-round draft pick from the team that signs him. The Latest: Giants give DL Leonard Williams franchise tag ___More AP NFL: and,Tampa Bay Lightning advance to face Dallas Stars in Stanley Cup finals, beating New York Islanders 2-1 in OT in Game 6 The New York Giants have placed a non-exclusive franchise tag on defensive tackle Leonard Williams two before the 2015 first-round draft choice was to become an unrestricted free agent.A franchise tag allows the two sides to work on a long-term contract. If there is no contract agreement before July 15, Williams will play this coming season under the one-year deal. His salary will be a calculation based on the average of the top five salaries from his position, expected to be around $16 million.Williams is free to negotiate with other teams when the free agency signing period begins Wednesday. If he signs a contract with another team, the Giants will receive two first-round draft choices as compensation.New York acquired Williams from the Jets for two draft choices on Oct. 29: a third-round selection in 2020 and a second choice that is a conditional fifth-rounder in 2021.Williams is the first Giants player to receive a tag since another defensive lineman, Jason Pierre-Paul, in 2015. March 16, 2020 Williams played in eight games with five starts for the Giants. The former Southern California player had 26 tackles, a half-sack, two tackles for loss, 11 quarterback hits, two passes defended and a forced fumble. The Giants also made a qualifying offer to placekicker Aldrick Rosas, a restricted free agent.___11:10 a.m.The Kansas City Chiefs have placed the nonexclusive franchise tag on Chris Jones, raising the possibility that the Pro Bowl defensive tackle will remain with the Super Bowl champions for at least one more season. The Browns also released veteran safety Morgan Burnett, creating another need as the team moves into free agency amid nationwide shutdowns due to the COVID-19 pandemic.Burnett suffered a torn Achilles tendon last season and missed the final six games.Cleveland also tendered exclusive tags to free agents Pharoah Brown, Dontrell Hilliard and KhaDarel Hodge.Hunt was banned from the first eight games last season by the league or two physical altercations while he was with the Kansas City Chiefs. The Cleveland-area native was primarily a blocker for Pro Bowler Nick Chubb, but he rushed for 179 yards and scored two touchdowns. He also caught 37 passes for 285 yards and a TD.With more than $60 million of salary-cap space, Cleveland is expected to be active in free agency, with offensive tackle a priority. first_img Published on April 26, 2012 at 12:00 pm Contact Nick: [email protected] | @nicktoneytweets Comments The awkward silence in Veronica Grant’s car indicated her passenger, Jasmine Watson, had something bad on her mind.During Wednesday night’s road doubleheader against DePaul, Watson managed only one hit in six at-bats with three strikeouts for Syracuse (35-12, 12-4). And as the two teammates pulled into the SU Softball Stadium parking lot for Thursday’s practice, Grant could tell Watson was still angry about her performance. With a quick joke about Watson’s less-than-stellar plate appearances, Grant made sure Watson didn’t take that anger into practice.‘You go up there (to bat) and it’s so serious,’ Grant said. ‘But sometimes making light of the situation eases whatever you’re going through.’Head coach Leigh Ross said Grant leads through her unique sense of humor. When an SU player has a bad at-bat or a bad game, Grant is the first one to joke about it in the dugout or the locker room. And while her teammates don’t immediately notice it, Ross said Grant takes the focus off their poor plays and motivates them to play better.AdvertisementThis is placeholder textThat sense of humor has helped her overcome her own struggles this season. After a hamstring injury sidelined her on March 17, the junior center fielder dealt with similar hitting slumps.Grant since straightened out her hitting woes. As the team heads to Connecticut to play three games against the Huskies (21-23, 9-10) this weekend, Grant is arguably SU’s best hitter. She’s only played in 35 games, but Grant is still third on the team in batting average. Her above-average range in the field allowed forLisaira and Shirley Daniels to return to corner outfield spots and maximize the potential of Ross’ lineup. On Wednesday against the Blue Demons, Grant showed why Ross considers her ‘one of the most well-rounded players’ on her roster. In the top of the seventh inning, Grant, who was already 3-for-4, hit the go-ahead two-run home run.DePaul rallied in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. But in the top of the ninth, Grant sparked a rally by smacking a two-out double and giving second baseman Stephanie Watts a chance to hit.‘Stephanie was telling me ‘just get me an at-bat,’ said Grant. ‘I trusted her. And then she goes up there and hits the game-winning shot.’Grant said it took a while for her teammates to understand her dry sarcasm. Yet, that sarcasm is predicated on the same sense of mutual trust she felt when Watts ended the second DePaul game with a two-run home run.She never jokes about her team’s occasional struggles with the intent of magnifying them, but instead adds light to an undesirable situation to help her team move forward.‘They understand that I’m doing it to calm us all down,’ Grant said. ‘You have to play the game with the outlook like it’s just a game, and when the bad comes, we all laugh at it. They expect that I’ll be honest with them, and I am.’SU has expected more from its recovering centerfielder since she returned from that injury in early April. After a few hitless games of her own, Grant broke out on the road against Notre Dame. She went 7-11 with five RBI on the weekend and hit her first home run of the season-a solo shot in the top of the seventh to force extra innings.Grant said that once the team went up to bat in the top of the eighth, she ‘trusted her teammates to end the game.’ Julie Wambold did just that with another home run, clinching SU’s 30th win on the season.‘That’s what I love about this team,’ Grant said. ‘We have each other’s backs.’Watson said Grant backs her up with her jokes, and said that laughing at this recent cold streak helps her move on from her worst games.‘In the moment, you’re focused on putting everything behind you, but sometimes you don’t,’ Watson said. ‘So we laugh about it and joke about it. It keeps us grounded and we need that sometimes.’[email protected]center_img Facebook Twitter Google+last_img read more

first_imgAfter losing at home to Arizona last Saturday, UCLA (19-2, 6-2) fell outside the top five in the AP poll for the first time in eight weeks. Meanwhile, USC (17-4, 4-4) received votes for the ninth straight week. The two teams were part of an elite corps of six that finished non-conference play undefeated. With UCLA off to its best start since the 2006-07 season — which saw them reach the Final Four — and USC off to its best start since 1971-72, Angelenos have been anticipating Wednesday’s game for quite some time. In fact, tickets sold out nearly one month ago. The Trojans will need to feed off the home-crowd energy delivered by 10,000-plus fans, including 1,500 raucous students. USC has won 27 of its last 31 home contests, but UCLA excels on the road, and it will surely bring a sizeable contingent of fans to the Galen Center, too. The Bruins are 4-1 away from home this season, with their sole loss coming from a buzzer-beater miracle at Oregon.Katlyn Lee | Daily TrojanIn UCLA’s rare losses, it has allowed 92.5 points per game. USC has scored 93 points three times this season — once in an overtime victory — but the Trojans average 69.9 points per game in conference play. Basketball statistician Ken Pomeroy ranks UCLA 127th in defensive efficiency, as the team has allowed 80.6 points per game in Pac-12 play. However, the Bruins have hid their defensive deficiencies behind one of the best scoring offenses in the nation. UCLA head coach Steve Alford has a repertoire of skilled guards on his team, as well as six double-digit scorers. The Bruins share the ball better than all of their conference foes. Their 22.3 assists-per-game is the highest mark in the Pac-12. Freshman prodigy Lonzo Ball leads the conference with 8.0 assists-per-game, and the guard’s ball-handling skills are unparalleled. He has maintained a 3.58 assist/turnover ratio this season — a full-point better than all other point guards in the league. No one scores more prolifically on UCLA than the coach’s son, senior guard Bryce Alford. He leads the Pac-12 in 3-pointers (71), and four Bruins, including Alford, shoot better than 43 percent from beyond the arc. There aren’t many all-around threats like UCLA freshman T.J. Leaf, who is second in the Pac-12 in 3-point percentage. The 6-foot-10 big man plays similarly to USC’s own, sophomore forward Bennie Boatwright. Leaf rebounds, passes and scores, averaging 16.7 points, 3.2 assists and 8.7 rebounds on the season. USC’s defense faces a tall order in slowing Leaf and company, especially without Boatwright and potentially redshirt senior forward Charles Buggs, who sat out Sunday night with a sore left knee. The Trojans will probably spend much of the game in their zone defense to solve the tricky individualmatchups UCLA poses. “We’re doing a good job defensively this year,” head coach Andy Enfield said. “We’ve been inconsistent this year, but we play hard. We block shots. We steal the ball. We play small. We play big. We’ve got a special group here.”Boatwright was originally expected to miss 6-8 weeks after injuring his knee against San Diego in November, but eight weeks later, he continues to sit. The coaching staff expects him to return to full practice soon — hopefully within a week or two.“Our coaching staff is thrilled to be 17-4 without Bennie,” Enfield said. “The 327th most experienced team in the country has played beyond its years.”last_img read more
