Kolkata: An auto rickshaw driver, identified as Swapan Roy, was arrested by the Baguiati police station on Wednesday for allegedly beating up a pedestrian near a bus terminus.Around 10:45 am on Tuesday, Sudarshan Chitlangia, a resident of Raghunathpur area, came to Baguiati with his brother Ankit. When he was approaching the Hatiara Road intersection, an auto rickshaw hit Ankit from behind. Though he was not injured, he screamed at the driver, asking why he was driving rashly. Seeing him standing in front of his auto, Roy started using abusive language. When Sudarshan and Ankit protested, Roy called some of his aides and again started using abusive words. Meanwhile, Ankit took out his mobile phone and started recording the incident. Seeing him recording their moves and words, Roy smelled danger and started threatening Ankit and Sudarshan and also ordered them to stop recording and delete the footage. As Ankit did not stop, Roy tried to snatch the phone. Some pedestrians tried to stop them but could not do anything. Alarmingly, no locals came to rescue Ankit and Sudarshan. In the meantime, some civic volunteers from Baguiati traffic guard noticed the incident and detained all of them. Seeing police getting involved, Roy’s aides fled the scene. Civic volunteers got hold of Roy and took him to the Baguati traffic guard. Later, Baguiati police station was called and Roy was handed over.
