first_imgTo the Editor: I am a trustee of the Bayonne Board Of Education. This letter is neither authorized by nor written on behalf of the Board Of Education. The views expressed herein are solely my personal views and not those of the Board Of Education. This fact is clear and obvious for all to see, as I recently voted against the proposed budget that increases taxes on Bayonne by another 3 perent. I was the only member of the Board of Ed who voted against raising taxes on Bayonne people. There were other options and alternatives to consider, but all the other members of the school board did not want to entertain them. They only wanted to raise your taxes.Earlier this year, I was the only trustee who went to Trenton to fight for Bayonne taxpayers and help secure an increase in state aid for our city’s school system, so as to prevent any tax hike. But during that same period of time, the leadership of the board lobbied the state for a waiver to increase your taxes 5 percent, so that they could hire more employees and up their salaries. This is what they intend to do as spelled out in the proposed budget that they are in the process of adopting. Some board members are reckless, wanting to give all of our new money to teachers and employees. Others are inconsiderate, thinking that an increase to seniors on a fixed income wouldn’t be a big deal. I, for one, will keep the promise I made you, to put you first, and never raise taxes, just because “we can.”When most people heard Bayonne was getting $2.8 million, they probably thought the board would lower their taxes, especially to make up for last year’s 6 percent increase. But instead, other BOE trustees felt that the new state aid should go to some of the biggest employee raises in the state. Remember, six of the nine trustees have conflicts of interests.I remain opposed to this current budget and am against any increase in taxes. I am in favor of saving Bayonne taxpayers money and giving them a smaller tax bill.Rather than get a waiver from the state to increase taxes, we should give the taxpayers a waiver from paying higher taxes and spend any additional funds from the state on more educational resources to help better meet the needs of our students.
